The 10 Cards You Should Always Have in Your MTG Commander Collection – Sol Ring

If you’re new to Commander and want a list of the cards you should focus on getting first, then you’re in the right place. Commander is, by its very nature, an incredibly diverse and creative format. You can absolutely go for some meta net deck if you want, but you can also just throw some cards together and hope for the best and still do pretty well.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of ten of the cards quite literally every single Commander player should aim to have. These are all great in just about every single deck they can go in and offer a great backbone for any collection. We’ve gone for just ten here, but there are definitely others you could throw in, and any Commander player is sure to have their own thoughts, too.

All-Rounder MTG Commander Cards You Should Have
This section is for cards that can go in any deck and likely should, too. Each of these is a must-have no matter what color you’re looking to play, and they’ll all help you start any deck off right. There are definitely plenty of other lands like Ancient Tomb (and more) that could work here, but we’ve kept it to just five… sort of.

Sol Ring
Sol Ring is a one-mana artifact that taps for two colorless mana. Its power is very much in its simplicity because it just lets you go a little bit faster, especially early on. If you can play this turn one, you’ll be prepped and ready with four-mana on turn two, and while everyone at the table is likely to target you from then on, you’ll be so far ahead that it shouldn’t even be an issue. Sol Ring is the cornerstone of Commander, and you should always have a few extra in the collection.
